Cory Lee, a travel blogger who focuses on accessibility and lives with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type 2, is well traveled to say the least. From wine tasting in Israel and going on safari in South Africa to relaxing in Iceland’s Blue Lagoon geothermal spa and meeting the indigenous Kichwa people of the Amazon, Corey has racked up more stamps on his passport than the average traveler.

But it wasn’t until recently that Cory was able to experience what many people consider a summertime staple: the water park.

“I had never been to a water park until I visited Morgan’s Inspiration Island,” says Cory.

The first fully accessible water park in the country, Morgan’s Inspiration Island opened its doors in June 2017, and, from the moment Cory read about the park, he knew he needed to be among the first to visit it.

“I remember saying, ‘when it opens I have to be there’ and counting down the days for it to open over a three year period,” remembers Cory after reading about the park in 2014.

The wait was long, but certainly worth it.

“Morgan’s Inspiration Island went above and beyond all of my expectations,” Cory says. For a guy as well-traveled as Cory, that’s high praise. (For a full review of Cory’s visit, be sure to check out his blog.)

“From the moment you walk in there is a wheelchair valet, where you exchange your usual wheelchair for a water proof wheel chair. There are accessible family restrooms all over the park that include Hoyer lifts and adult changing tables. They have every accessible feature you could possibly imagine” says Cory.

There are several rides and attractions for guests to enjoy. Rainbow Reef is a warmed water splash pad designed for guests of all ages that may not be able to tolerate regular water temperature. Rainbow Reef includes giant spouting sea creatures, interactive water features and a variety of geysers that guests of all ages can enjoy.

Like Rainbow Reef, Shipwreck Island offers foaming water geysers in addition to an accessible pirate ship, slides, water cannons and a huge dumping bucket.

If you’re looking to sit back, relax and take in the sights and sounds the River Boat Adventure Ride is for you. This excursion offers more than five minutes of riding through a jungle like setting: bird and animals noises included.

Cory was able to enjoy all of these attractions in an air powered waterproof wheelchair. The park provides these unique chairs; however, there are only a handful available for use and they are given out on a first come first serve basis, so if you want one it’s a good idea to get to the park early.

Cory whole-heartedly recommends Morgan’s Inspiration Island to MDA families looking for an accessible and exciting summer getaway.

“I would absolutely recommend Morgan’s Inspiration Island to MDA families. It is geared more towards younger children but it just brought out my inner child and had a blast. I think it’s really a park for everyone,” says Cory.

Cory’s many online fans who read his blog are excited to follow his lead.

“My social media followers were totally surprised when they heard about it, but now they’re planning trips to visit,” shares Cory.

So what’s next for this avid traveler? He’ll be adding a few more stamps to his passport with trips to Quebec, Scandinavia and Russia. And, as always, he’ll be bringing us along beside him as he writes about his adventures online and encourages us all to get out and see the world.
