Evenings of Discovery and Impact

The Muscular Dystrophy Association launched a new event series in 2017, MDA Discovery & Impact Events, to bring greater awareness to and educate families and supporters about the progress being made in the neuromuscular disease space.

Industry and health care leaders, as well as families benefitting from research advances, served as guest speakers, highlighting the safe and effective treatment options now available to MDA families, including three new drugs that can trace their origins directly to MDA research dollars. In 2016, the FDA approved Exondys 51 for some forms of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Spinraza for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — the first drugs approved to treat these diseases. In 2017, Emflaza was also approved to treat DMD.

The community-focused events brought together key stakeholders and community leaders to celebrate progress made and learn more about the current work being done in an effort to bring forth more advances and treatments.

Thanks to the generous support received to date from Biogen, PTC Therapeutics and Santhera, MDA hosted events in the following cities: Chicago, Boston, New York, Dallas and Houston. There are plans to host more events this year, including an event in Washington, D.C. scheduled for Feb. 8, 2018 at the National Press Club.”
